The movie opens with Phil (Bradley Cooper) on the phone. He is calling the fiancee of his best friend Doug (Justin Bartha) and tells her that they messed up. “We lost Doug.” The fiancée, Tracy Garner (Sasha Barrese), flips because she and Doug are supposed to get married in 5 hours. “That’s not going to happen.”

Cut to two days earlier.

Doug and his soon-to-be brother-in-law Alan (Zach Galifianakis) are trying on tuxedos. Alan says it’s OK if Doug doesn’t bring him to the bachelor party tonight. Alan is severely socially challenged but Doug makes it clear that he wants Alan to be there with him. Since they are going to be brothers soon, they have to look out for each other.

Doug goes to talk to his father-in-law, Sid Garner (Jeffery Tambor), and is given permission to take his Mercedes to Vegas for the bachelor party since Sid remembers what it was like to be a young man. Doug thanks him and promises that he will be the only one to drive the car that day. Doug and Alan then leave to pick up the others.

Phil is in front of a class of students reminding them to pay 90 dollars for a field trip to an observatory, which they all promptly pay. Phil then removes the approximately 3500 dollars from their envelopes and puts them into an envelope marked Vegas. He grabs his bag, ignores a student and jumps into the Mercedes. The group then goes to get their last member.

Stu (Ed Helms), a dentist, is at home arguing with his girlfriend, Melissa (Rachael Harris), about the bachelor party. Stu tells her that they are going to Napa Valley for a wine tasting. Melissa is convinced, however, that Phil will find a way to find a strip club. Melissa treats Stu like crap, but Stu takes it with a smile and tries to kiss her but she won’t have any of it. The guys arrive and Stu leaves.

The group drives to Vegas and check into Caesars Palace. They try to decide how to pay and Phil volunteers Stu’s credit card as the main payment method. Stu flips, telling Phil that Melissa would see the charges and realize that they went to Vegas. Doug tells Stu that they’ll sort out the payment when they check out. They go upstairs to get changed. Stu tells Doug and Phil that he’s going to propose to Melissa and use his grandmother’s Holocaust ring as an engagement ring. While Doug congratulates Stu, Phil openly points out that Melissa is a controlling bitch. Stu and Phil get into an argument and Phil tells Stu that Melissa is clearly not a good person since she cheated on Stu when she slept with a bartender on a cruise. At that point, Alan comes in which a satchel and asks the guys if they’re ready to let the dogs out.

The four go to the roof and make a toast. Alan gives everyone a shot of Jägermeister and then reads an awkward speech to the group telling them how the four of them are like a pack of lone wolves. Phil then tells the others that he’s toasting them to a night they will never forget.

Time passes as we see Vegas at night.

The next morning. A woman walks out of the room carrying her stilettos. Stu comes to on the floor with blood on his shirt. Phil is sleeping on the floor and Alan wakes up on the couch. The room is a complete mess. A chair is horribly burned, stolen statues litter the room, and there are a bunch of champagne bottles aligned as bowling pins. Alan goes to the bathroom and sees a tiger. Phil wakes up when Alan steps on him and thinks that Alan is imagining things. He laughs at the fact that there is a tiger in the bathroom and tells Stu that his head hurts. Stu realizes that he’s missing a tooth and Phil can’t help but laugh. He stops once they realize Doug is nowhere to be found. They also note that Doug’s mattress is missing. During their search, they hear a baby crying in the closet. They don’t know whose baby it is but decide to take it with them to breakfast.

At breakfast, Alan makes the baby pretend-masturbate for the guys and lovingly dubs him Carlos. Phil, Stu and Alan realize that they can’t remember anything from the night before. They check their pockets for clues to what happened last night. Alan has Stu’s tooth, Stu has a receipt for an 0 withdrawal at the Bellagio, and Phil has a hospital bracelet on his wrist. They decide to go to the hospital.

Outside the hotel, the trio waits for the valet to bring around their car. They notice a cleaning crew removing a bed impaled on Caesar’s statue. Phil notes that they did a lot of messed up stuff that night apparently. Then the valet drives up, not in the Mercedes, but in a police car and gives Phil the keys. They drive off and head to the hospital to get a lead on where Doug is.

The clinic doctor tells them that Phil was admitted with a mild concussion and that Doug was with them when they visited. Phil bribes him for more information and the doctor tells him that they had just come from a wedding at a chapel a few blocks away. The doctor also tells Phil that he had high traces of “ruphylin” (referring to the date-rape drug known as roofies) in his system. Phil freaks at the possibility of having been raped, but the doctor tells him he wasn’t. The trio decides to head there.

When they arrive at the chapel, they are greeted like family by the proprietor, Eddy. They can’t remember why, but soon found out that Stu married a woman named Jade (Heather Graham) the night before and that everyone was present for the wedding. Stu freaks out a little, Phil looks into an annulment and Eddy gives them Jades address.

The trio head to the car and as they pull out, they are confronted by a pair of Asian gangsters demanding that the trio return someone they kidnapped. The gangsters pull out guns and threaten the trio before accidentally shooting Eddy in the shoulder. Phil drives the car out of the lot. They get to Jade’s and find her on the phone freaking out because she couldn’t find her baby, who turns out to be named Tyler. She sees Stu and is happy to see him but he freaks when he finds out that 1) she’s a stripper who works as a hooker and 2) he gave her his grandmother’s Holocaust ring. The group is interrupted by the arrival of two police officers who arrest the trio for stealing their car.

At the police station, Phil decides to call Tracy and tells her that they are enjoying Vegas so much they are staying an extra day. He doesn’t tell her that they lost Doug and is forced to hang up when they are taken to the interrogation room. The two officers are angry that the trio stole their car and want to hold them over to be arraigned the following Monday. Phil explains the situation and then attempts to blackmail them into a deal, which backfires. The officers agree to let the guys off the hook but the guys are tricked into being test subjects for a group of kids, demonstrating the effects of a Taser.

After the demonstration, the trio head over to recover the Mercedes that the police impounded. Stu is surprised that the car is in pristine condition and they then drive back toward the hotel to see if Doug went back. On the way they hear a knocking in the trunk and think that Doug is in the trunk of the car. They open it only to have a flamboyant and naked Asian man named Leslie Chow (Ken Jeong) jump out with a crowbar and attack them. After he runs off to the distance, Alan admits that he spiked their Jägermeister with the roofies, thinking they were Ecstasy pills. Stu flips out, but Phil plays it cool and the trio returns to the hotel.

They are about to enter the hotel room when they remember the tiger. They cautiously open the door to find Mike Tyson and his bodyguard in the room. Tyson is singing “In the Air Tonight” by Phil Collins, getting the guys to join in before knocking Alan out cold. It turns out the tiger belonged to Tyson and the reason they were able to find the hotel room was because they found Doug’s jacket and room key in the tiger cage. The trio are terrified because Tyson implies that the tiger may have eaten Doug. Tyson gives them an hour to bring the tiger back to his house. Alan puts five roofies into some raw meat in order to knock out the tiger, and two hours later they cart the tiger into the Mercedes.

While driving to Tyson’s mansion, the tiger wakes up and scratches Phil’s neck. The trio gets out of the car and pushes it the last mile of the way while the tiger chews the interior of the car. Upon arriving at the mansion, Tyson shows them a security tape of them stealing the tiger. Doug was with them and they put it into a police car but not before Phil screamed, “Look, I’m raping Tyson’s tiger” and pantomiming having sex with the animal. Tyson asks where they got the cop car, and gives them props when they tell him they stole it. With no further leads, the group heads back to the hotel.

On the way to the hotel, Chow and his men crash their car into the Mercedes and force it into a pole. They tell Phil that he kidnapped Chow calling him “my lucky charm” and that he wanted to take Chow home with them. The gangsters also noticed that Alan took Chow’s purse (which resembles Alan’s satchel) with him and that the satchel Chow carried had ,000 worth of Bellagio chips. Phil says they’ll return the money, and Chow gives them until sunrise to get it to them and shows them that he has Doug in his trunk with a hood over his face.

The gang returns to the hotel and can’t find the satchel. They call Jade and let Alan try counting cards in order to win back the ,000. Alan is a success and they make over ,000. Just as the security men are about to move in on them for card counting, Jade fakes an accident and Alan and Phil get away. The group drives to the meeting point to make the exchange. They give Chow ,000 in cash and Chow gives them Doug. Unfortunately, it’s the wrong Doug. The Doug that Chow’s gangster kidnapped (Mike Epps), who is African American, turns out to be the man who sold Alan the bad Ecstasy. Phil gets mad and tells Chow to give them back their money and to take “Black Doug” with him. Chow refuses and drives away.

Phil decides that it is time to end the charade and tell Tracy what happened. We hear the opening play in the background as Black Doug, Stu and Alan discuss the reasoning behind the name roofies. Stu then realizes that they put Doug on the roof of Caesars Palace as a joke but forgot him and locked him up there. The mattress on the statue of Caesar was Doug trying to signal for help. Stu immediately tackles Phil and takes the phone away from him. He tells Tracy that Phil is drunk and that they are heading back now with Doug.

The trio race to the hotel and find Doug sunburned and huddling for shade on the roof. Doug attacks Phil when Phil tells him that he is going to miss his own wedding. The group checks out and races to the now ruined Mercedes. Stu and Jade have a heart to heart and Jade tells him she knows the marriage was a mistake and gives him back his ring. Stu asks her if she wants to go on a date next weekend and she agrees. She also tells him that the reason Stu is missing a tooth is because Alan told him that he wasn’t a good enough dentist if he couldn’t remove his own tooth. Stu laughs at this and the group departs. Doug pulls out the missing satchel with Chow’s ,000 worth of casino chips. It had been left with him on the roof.

Phil speeds down the highway on the way to the wedding. A tuxedo shop van drives up and tosses them four tuxedos that they ordered via phone. The group arrive at the wedding a few minutes late. Tracy walks down the aisle with Sid and asks Doug what happened. He explains what happened and tells her it will never happen again as long as they are married. Tracy forgives him and the two get married.

Phil is happy to see his wife and son at the reception and spends the evening happy to be home. Alan and Stu are drinking at the bar when Melissa shows up. Melissa is mad that Stu didn’t call at all and ignored her calls. She flips when she sees he’s missing a tooth. Stu finally can’t take it anymore and flips out on her. She asks him when their relationship stopped working and Stu loudly announces that it was over when she had sex with the sailor on the cruise. Phil smiles proudly while Doug and Tracy look on in shock. Alan corrects him by saying it was a bartender, and Stu laughs. He tells Alan that they should go dance, which they do. Afterwards, Alan hits on Melissa and gets shot down.

The guys are all gathered on the patio when Alan walks up with a camera he found in the backseat of the car; it contains photos of their adventures and mishaps in Las Vegas. They decide to look at the photos once and then delete the evidence.

During the credits, the pictures are shown.

A video images shows a pregnant Kristi (Sprague Grayden) and Daniel (Billy Boland) are painting their nursery in anticipation of the arrival of their first son, Hunter. Kristi’s sister, Katie (Katie Featherston), arrives to congratulate them and asks if she can drop off a few boxes she was left by their grandmother when she passed away. She leaves them boxes full of VHS tapes that were filmed when they were children. As she leaves, Daniel teases her about her relationship with her boyfriend Micah since they are moving in together.

One Year Later.

The house is a mess and Daniel is trying to document all the damage and any items that might have been stolen and goes down into the basement. While in the basement, the only thing he notices to be missing is the box of tapes that Katie left them.

On a videotape image, it’s Katie’s birthday, and there’s a party. The year is 1988 as identified by the caption on the video image. Dennis (Christopher Nicholas Smith), the camera man, is a wedding videographer and has been dating Katie and Kristi’s mother, Julie (Lauren Bittner), for the last few months. He records Kristi talking to herself by a little soccer net that they have set up, and he asks Julie to bring her over so that they can sing happy birthday to Katie. Kristi continues talking to her imaginary friend, “Toby” despite the insistence of her mother to play with the other children. Dennis films a video entry from each family member. Julie shows off Katie’s cake while Julie’s mother tells Katie that when she was born she laughed and cried. Dennis films himself thanking Katie for being so welcoming and despite the fact that he isn’t her father, he loves her very much.

That night, Julie rolls a joint and Dennis decides it will be fun to record it. Despite the fact she wants to keep her kids from seeing it, Dennis convinces her to let him keep the camera on. Eventually, he convinces her that they should make a sex tape. However, at that moment an earthquake occurs and the couple runs to find the girls. Dust falls around the bedroom and outlines around the shape of something in front of the bed. It is there for a minute before the dust collapses. The outline gone.

The next morning, Dennis is going over the footage and asks Julie to confirm what he’s just seen. She asks him to delete the video, but he tells her that he needs to document this because hes certain that something was there. He recruits his friend Randy, a tech expert, to help him set up cameras around the house to catch whatever is happening.

It’s Picture day. Kristi and Katie get all dressed up while Julie and Dennis take pictures. Once Julie takes the kids off to get their photographs taken, Dennis is alone in the house and hears a noise. He follows it around and ends up in the girls bedroom where a small robotic bear has fallen down. He notices that a small crawl space/cupboard has been opened and looks inside. It’s empty aside from a few of Kristi’s things, but when he turns around Kristi is standing right behind him. He’s shocked that she was able to sneak up on him like that and jokes around a bit.

That night, Dennis sets up a camera in both bedrooms to catch some activity. Kristi wakes up in the middle of the night and walks towards the cupboard, which can be heard creaking open. She starts talking about Dennis describing him as “Nice”. The next morning, Dennis asks her about the conversation, and she tells him that what she and Toby talk about is secret because she wants to stay safe. Dennis asks if Toby is threatening her, but she just says that she just wants to stay safe.

Randy checks out a few books on entities and demons so that he and Dennis know what they are dealing with. Randy discovers that witches covens would make deals with demons and use young girls as the vessels through which young boys would be born. The children would then be brainwashed in order to do the demon’s bidding. Dennis laughs this idea off and sets to work converting a fan into an oscillating camera stand. They find a photograph of a coven from the 1930s, each with a distinct insignia of an upside down triangle within a circle.

Julie’s mother expresses her disapproval of Dennis to Julie, citing his lack of affluence and wealth as a major area of concern as she wants her daughter to be financially secure. She asks Julie if shell ever have another child but Julie says shes fine with two beautiful girls. Julie’s mother reminds her that she always wanted to have a large family and shouldn’t stop until she has a son.

Dennis goes to check out a noise he heard. Randy hears it as well, and they end up in front of Dennis’ closet. Dennis opens it, and out jumps Julie, wearing a witch mask. Dennis freaks out and has to sit down to calm himself while Randy and Julie laugh uncontrollably.

The girls are sleeping outside in a tent. Julie hears noises going on in the girls bedroom so she assumes that the girls came back into the house. Dennis goes to check on them, but Julie then starts hearing noises from her bathroom. She starts walking towards the bathroom and the door to her bedroom starts to close slowly until it bursts open Dennis can’t find the girls in their room. They go down and try to get to the girls outside, but the door is locked. They unlock it and bring the girls inside.

More footage shows Kristi going on night excursions with Toby and talking. During a tea party, Dennis sits down with Kristi and Toby. Kristi moves her cup and accidentally touches Toby and quickly apologizes. Dennis asks why she is apologizing and Kristi explains that Toby doesn’t like being touched. Dennis mockingly apologizes for her, explaining that it was an accident. He leaves the camera to record more of Kristi and Toby talking. Katie returns and starts making fun of Kristi calling her a baby. She goes into the cupboard, which Kristi says is Toby’s room, and the invisible demon slams the door shut and refuses to let Katie out. Katie starts screaming, but Kristi just says, “I told you not to go in there”. Julie arrives and Katie bursts out of the cupboard screaming that Kristi locked her in. When Dennis goes to investigate the cupboard, he finds the insignia of the witch,s coven scrawled on the wall.

Julie and Dennis decide to go out for the night and hire a babysitter to look after the girls. She plays around with them and jumps in front of the camera in the kitchen to scare Dennis before dressing up like a ghost and fooling around with the girls. After the girls are in bed, she goes downstairs to study. Someone comes downstairs with a blanket draped over themselves and stands behind the babysitter creepily. Before she turns around, the blanket collapses, empty. She is confused and brings the blanket upstairs when the invisible demon blows on her and scares her so that she stays downstairs the rest of the night. When the couple returns, the babysitter leaves immediately, obviously scared. When Dennis and Randy observe the tapes, they freak out.

Julie wakes up for a midnight snack. She tosses the remnants into the garbage disposal but drops a spoon into the disposal unit. The light in the next room turns on by itself as Julie sticks her hand into the disposal unit and suddenly screams. The light has fallen with a crash and startled her. Dennis goes upstairs to investigate, but the girls are both asleep. A few hours later, Kristi wakes up and tells Toby that she doesn’t want to do what he says and tells him to go away.

Kristi wakes up the next morning and is incredibly sick. Dennis and Julie take her to the hospital and Katie is left with Randy to look after her. She bullies him into playing Bloody Mary with her, and they do it twice. The second time, the demon scratches Randy across the stomach and begins overtly terrorizing them as blurs outside the door, slamming at them and scaring them. Randy opens the door and has furniture thrown at them. He grabs Katie, and they run. When Dennis returns home, Randy packs up all his equipment and leaves because its too much for him.

Kristi and Katie wake up, and their Lite Bright is displaying the sign of the Witches Coven. Dennis is editing together wedding tapes while Julie is asleep in bed. Katie’s bed sheets start moving, slowly growing in size over her until they fall down. Suddenly, the cover is thrown at the camera, and Katie is dragged across the room by the unseen force several times while she screams for Kristi to help her. Kristi screams at the demon to let her go, but it throws the bed around. Katie is dragged back into the cupboard until Kristi agrees to do what the demon asks.

The next morning, the girls beg their mother to take them to their grandmother’s house to get away from Toby. Their mother won’t hear about it and starts yelling at Dennis for filling their heads with this demon nonsense. He tells her to look at the tapes, but she refuses. Katie is running after Kristi when she hits an invisible wall: Toby. ‘Toby’ grabs her by the hair and yanks her off the ground, throwing her. Katie comes to her mother screaming that Toby pulled her hair and Julie tells Dennis that the experiment is over. However, she walks into the Kitchen and sees its empty. Suddenly, all the utensils and furniture fall from the ceiling, scaring Julie out of the room.

Dennis, Julie and the girls drive to Julie’s mother’s house. They eat apple pie when they arrive and Dennis sees Kristi fingering one of the paintings in the dining room. He tells her not to touch it because it might be expensive. As Kristi and Katie play outside, Dennis films Julie talking to her mother about what is happening. Kristi and Julie’s mother play dress up, and Kristi puts on a wedding dress. When Dennis asks her who the lucky groom is, Kristi replies ‘Toby’. This freaks Dennis and Julie out, and they put the girls to bed early.

A car pulls up around 2:00 am, and Julie goes to see who it is. When she doesn’t return, Dennis goes to find her. Julie’s mother appears behind him for a moment, but he doesn’t notice. He searches the house but can’t find anyone. He goes out to the garage and finds a group of older women standing in a circle. He freaks out, running back into the main house and locking the door behind him. The women are briefly seen walking towards him ina zombie-like walk.

He runs around the house calling for the girls and finds Julie at the top of the stairs. Something is odd though as her expression is blank and she appears taller. He runs upstairs and sees that she is levitating before she is thrown at him at full force and they fall down the stairs together. Julie is dead, and Dennis hears the whimpering Kristi who is in the dining room. He sees the paintings removed and coven symbols everywhere. He grabs Kristi and they run, as the invisible demon starts attacking them. They hide in the closet for a few moments before Dennis tells her that they need to find Katie. They run through the house as things are thrown about them. They see Katie by the steps crying over the body of Julie. Dennis tells Kristi to stay by the wall when he goes over. Katie turns around possessed and throws him across the room, breaking both of his legs. When he starts to crawl back into view, the demon grabs him by his arms and legs and breaks his spine, contorting his body into unnatural shapes before letting him go. Julie’s mother walks into the room holding Katie’s hand and tells her and Kristi to “get ready”. They head up the staircase, and Kristi cheerfully calls out, “C’mon, Toby!” We hear a faint animal growling sound before the camera goes black.
