Caveat Emptor – Buyer beware! For the majority of this series’ life, its bread and butter has been Hollywood satire. It’s been the funny story of how four guys from Queens with a small amount of guile and virtually no talent have come close to taming Tinseltown.
Past seasons have been summertime bliss. It’s been the equivalent of the afterglow you feel leaving a beach-party in a sweet convertible with the rag-top down and the stereo thumping knowing you have crazy stories to tell your friends in the morning.
This season is a sharp departure from all of that. Everything is the inverse of what it was in seasons’ past.
The movie star, Vincent Chase, has always been like the (former) planet Pluto. He’s loopy, sort of remote and meandering in a different direction than other celebrities in his orbit. His aloofness is what has made him charming, cool and fun – (perhaps because he’s the refreshing opposite of the preening divas celebrities normally tend to be.)
But when he emerges from a life-threatening situation in the season’s first episode, the Vincent Chase we see is one driven by a cold fury. And this fury takes the entire season into an extremely odd and unexpected direction.
Everyone is affected by this moodswing.
Johnny Drama, who was slowly mounting a comeback before some unfortunate (self-inflicted) mishaps, appears to have completely given up on his dreams. We as viewers have never been privy to Drama when he was not animated by his dual quests for career redemption and to finally be taken seriously as an actor. (What is the B-actor to do when he can no longer find his motivation?)
Nor have we seen Turtle (previously such an unmotivated hanger-on that he could barely get out of bed each morning) so desperate to succeed. His newly-found motivation is so jarring that you want to say “Imposter, who are you and what have you done with Turtle?”
Eric finds himself suddenly paired with an evil doppelganger played by Scott Caan. It’s eerie. If Eric was a foolish, chauvinistic, unscrupulous lout who was successful, he would be Ari Gold. If he had the same bad qualities and wasn’t successful, he would be Scott. The dynamic between Eric and Scott is fascinating.
Ari remains Ari. Over the years, he’s grown rich and powerful while alienating nearly everyone. The proverbial bull in the china shop. His enemies finally decide to gore this bull. What happens to him at the end of this season is surprising but makes perfect sense.
In conclusion, the writers of Entourage tried something different this season. It almost as if we’ve stepped into a Bizarro universe this time around. It undoubtedly is the most polarizing of the Entourage seasons thus far. I found the writers’ effort entertaining and admirable. But, with its extremely dark undertones, this season’s not for everyone.
“Entourage” is one of my favorite shows, and I own every season. This season however has been the weakest yet, as the storylines disrespect the characters we love, and they are almost all depressing. Vince is going the way of Lindsay Lohan. Turtle is a struggling business owner. Drama and Eric are going through the exact same things they did last season. There is a major lack of fun – the balance is just off. I will remain loyal to the show, but this edition of the series is not it’s shining moment.
I am a huge fan of Entourage, but I have to admit, all the living large and blowing cash while bedding down every girl in town does get old after a while. Who’s life is really like that all the time? Let’s face it, people cant handle or stomach the truth sometimes. This season brought more truth to how things really are. Celebrities are constantly in re-hab and clubbing around with the wrong crowd. They are people who have problems just like everyone else. Vince has been sheltered by his constant Entourage of boys. It makes sense that when he finally stikes out on his own of course he’s gonna fall, hes never had a challenge in his life, his entourage handled all his “challenges so far”.(remember the first 6 seasons guys?) To the people who think this season sucks, go turn on a fairy tale that will give you that yearned for happy ending. We live in real life people, the drug addiction, wanting to change a woman, getting married, and Ari’s wife finally saying Enough is Enough are all things that happen in REAL LIFE!! I dont watch the show to escape from my own reality. If you need to watch tv for an escape and then chatise writers for not giving you what you want, you are the ones with issues! Grow up and get therapy already. This show is amazing and I am glad that the writers chose to explore the characters in new depth. Lets be honest, life isnt all champagne and roses. Even movie stars arent perfect and have challenges to help them build their character. It would have been a lie to not show these sorts of things happening, after all, it is Los Angeles. Or perhaps some people writing the bad reviews have never been to Los Angeles, in which case they shouldnt even be commenting on that which they know nothing of. Frankly, I am surprised these sorts of story lines werent used in earlier seasons. This season you can really feel for the characters in their situations, they are protrayed as more real. And I absolutely LOVE when the porn star points out to Vince that although she gets paid for sex, he isnt much better than her cuz he sleeps around with lots of women just for the fun of it. Its very sad to see so many people hating on the show because they showed some of the ugly truths that exists in the industry.
Oh, and bringing back Billy Walsh sober and on point was refreshing, as I felt sorry for the character before, from his anger and drinking, he was obviously a character with a lot of pain…its refreshing to see the change and clever to throw it in this season while Vince is spiriling downward. It sets it up so that Walsh, having been where Vince is headed, can be the one to help him see the light and heal from his pain to become himself once again. I still just cant believe some people hating cuz this season was different from the rest. No wonder hollywood can continually recycle the same lame movie/tv ideas and keep remaking them and people keep buying it up. As for me, I love the originality and passion in something new. Im not interested in watching old ideas be continually resurected and re-done with the same endings. Where is everyones imagination gone too? perhaps too many people remain slaves to their 9 to 5s and have lost the light within them.
